This Giving Tuesday, Forget Your Wallet: “Living Tuesday” Campaign Seeks Life-Saving Kidney Donor
Inspired by actor Jesse Eisenberg’s decision to donate a kidney to a stranger, grassroots campaign aims to find a Type O match for Boston nonprofit leader Darrell Byers
BOSTON, MA — This Giving Tuesday (December 2, 2025), a campaign is asking people to give something that costs nothing but could mean everything: a kidney compatibility test.
The “Living Tuesday” initiative seeks a Type O kidney donor for Springfield native Darrell Byers, a nonprofit leader who has spent his entire career helping others. A proud diabetes advocate and national Dexcom spokesperson, Byers has spent his career championing health and justice. After watching his own father suffer from workplace illness at a Monsanto plant, he dedicated his life to environmental justice and public service — working for organizations including Earthjustice and GBH.
The campaign draws inspiration from actor Jesse Eisenberg, who recently announced he would donate a kidney to a stranger in December. “It’s essentially risk-free and so needed,” Eisenberg told TODAY.com. “I think people will realize that it’s a no-brainer, if you have the time and the inclination.”
Chelsea Lowe, a writer and editor who has been friends with Byers for over 30 years, is helping bring attention to his story. “I’ve watched Darrell spend his whole life showing up for other people,” said Lowe. “Helping share what he’s going through feels like the least I can do — and yet it could mean everything.”
Over 95% of living kidney donors recover fully and live normal, healthy lives. Getting tested is free, and kidney recipients no longer need to wait for a perfect match thanks to paired donation programs.
Byers — a man of deep faith who raised his son to meet presidents and civil rights heroes — now needs his community to show up for him.
The Living Tuesday campaign launches today on Instagram and Facebook, where Byers’ wide network of colleagues, friends, and fellow advocates can help spread the word. Follow #LivingTuesday and #DonorForDarrell.
